Specialty Coffee in Santiago de Chile
Santiago Coffee Culture
People in Santiago, and Chile as a whole, definitely gravitate much more to tea over coffee and always have, but little by little the mindset is starting to shift. While I don’t expect things to ever completely swing in the opposite direction, it is nice to see the specialty coffee scene continue to grow and expand both in the capital and beyond. On my trips to visit family while growing up, instant coffee was certainly popular and chains claimed the rest of the space, but exciting things are happening, and the coffee community is doing everything it can to introduce something better. In modern times, you’ll find something good to drink in various neighborhoods before you gear up for an empanada and a pisco sour. Singular Coffee Roasters
Singular has great locations in the endlessly cool Barrio Lastarria as well as the more residential Ñuñoa, but it’s this streetside walk-up coffee bar in Providencia that is impressive. Infusing the always-on-the-go atmosphere of the city’s primary business district with the laid back nature of pour over coffee may combine two contrasting lifestyles, but sometimes it’s good to slow down a little bit.
