How to Brew with The Toddy Cold Brew Maker

A Guide to Brewing the Perfect Cup

An Introduction

Cold brew is killing it these days. There are many ways to make cold brew, but the Toddy is one of the most accessible. Affordable and easy to use, the Toddy cold brew maker is perfect for anyone who loves cold brew but is tired of spending an arm and a leg on a regular basis for cold brew in cans, bottles or from coffee shops. The concentrate it produces may not look like much, but it is important to remember that it is meant to be mixed with other ingredients to create a full cup, so one decanter will create plenty of coffee.

While I will always be a fan of slowing things down and appreciating the process, this is one situation where I absolutely recommend using an electric coffee grinder or asking the coffee shop to grind your beans for you, rather than using a manual coffee grinder. That is just because of the sheer quantity of coffee you’ll be grinding to make cold brew concentrate with the Toddy.

Step 2

Wet the felt Toddy filter puck with filtered water until damp, and place it into circular “well” space in the bottom of the Toddy, this time from the inside.

Step 3

Unfold and open the Toddy paper filter bag and place it into the Toddy, pressing the bottom with your hand so the inside of the bag is mostly flat.

Step 4

Add 340 grams of coarse ground coffee into the filter bag and shake the whole Toddy to level the grounds. I would not go above 340g, but if you have less than that available in the moment, don’t worry about it and add however much coffee you do have.

Step 5

If using 340g of coffee grounds, add 7 cups of water to the filter bag, trying to evenly pour the water to wet all the grounds. If you are using less than 340g of grounds, you have 2 options. If you want consistency with other batches, you can do the math and reduce the amount of water to match the ratio to coffee as the Toddy recipe calls for. Otherwise, you can just add 7 cups of water anyway to create the same amount as normal. Since the Toddy creates cold brew concentrate and it is best to cut the final product with water, the change in ratios will not water down the concentrate too much.

Step 6

Lightly stir or pat down the top layer of grounds under the water to moisten them more. Twist the top of the filter bag so it stays closed. Let sit for 12 to 24 hours. You can add some aluminum foil or plastic wrap over the top of the Toddy if you want to protect the cold brew from dust, pet hair or anything else.

Step 7

Once the 12-24 hours have passed, carefully hold the Toddy over the glass decanter and pull the rubber stopper out from the bottom. Place the Toddy down on the decanter and allow it to fully drain. Place the rubber top into the decanter so it seals and move to the refrigerator. You now have cold brew concentrate that can be used for plenty of cold brew coffee recipes! It will stay fresh for approximately 2 weeks if left in the fridge.

California Lox Bagel Sandwich

Cold brew is a great way to start the day in the summer, but also pretty much every other time of year depending on how you serve it. The combination of the smoked salmon and the silky cream cheese of a hand-crafted lox bagel breakfast pairs perfectly with a cold brew beverage. Might I suggest the zesty and refreshing cold brew tonic, or maybe a simple mixture of cold brew concentrate with cold filtered water and ice? Just make sure you mix the Toddy cold brew concentrate with water, milk or something else, unless you enjoy drinking rocket fuel.
