How to Brew with AeroPress

A Guide to Brewing the Perfect Cup

An Introduction

The AeroPress was invented by the creator of the Aerobie Flying Disc, one of my favorite toys as a kid, and Alan Adler really did a great job with the portable coffee maker too. While it is not the same thing as a cup of espresso, it can result in a similar robust flavor. Some like to add water after brewing for a type of Americano. Personally, I prefer to just brew a cup and drink. The AeroPress is made of BPA-free polypropylene and its small size makes it extremely travel-friendly.

*Read on to learn how to make AeroPress coffee the quick and easy way, without weighing or measuring anything. While the meticulous recipes used at coffee shops are incredible and in my opinion bring out the absolute best flavors from every bean and roast, and are my favorite way to drink coffee, when I’m at home making my own daily cup(s), I prefer the easy way and leave the rest to the pros at my favorite coffee shops.

Whole coffee beans
Coffee grinder
Gooseneck kettle

Step 1

Boil 2.5 cups of filtered water. While you’re waiting, grind a single heaping Aeropress scoop of coffee beans (approximately 2.5 tbsp) to a medium-fine level of coarseness.

Step 2

Place the paper filter into the filter cap and rinse with boiled water, discarding the water after it passes through. Screw the filter cap onto the main chamber and place the connected AeroPress on your coffee mug.

Step 3

Fill the chamber with the ground coffee and shake the chamber to level the grounds. Over 10 seconds, slowly pour water in a circular motion while rotating the mug, so that all the grounds are covered, filling the chamber to the ‘4’ line. Lightly stir the wet grounds with the stir paddle. Then insert the plunger at a light angle, lifting up slightly afterwards to create a seal.

Step 4

Count to 60 seconds, reaching a total of 70 seconds between steps 4 and 5. Then, remove the plunger, stir again and insert the plunger back into the chamber.

Step 5

Very slowly push down on the plunger, making sure you apply pressure directly downwards to ensure you do not tip the cup over and create a mess. Do not worry about how long this process takes, just slowly push down until you hear the air expel and the plunger compresses the grounds. If you push too fast, it is common for some coffee to spill out of your cup.

Step 6

Unscrew the filter cap and use the plunger to expel the grounds and paper filter directly into the trash. This is oddly satisfying.

Step 7: Enjoy!
